(More customer reviews)I have owned these boots and ridden in them extensively for about the past 3 years. Overall, they are a good product that protects the hoof from wear on difficult terrain and helps the horse stay comfortable over rocks but they do have some draw backs. First they are horrible to put on when you first get them. You need to make sure you get the size absolutely right because if they are a size too small they will not go on and if they are a size too big you will lose them. I recommend measuring the hoof in millimeters and comparing it to the chart on the Easycare website. In fact I recommend that you measure the hoof several different times so that you know you are getting a good measurement (always measure after the hoof after it is freshly trimmed). Once you get them, the first few times they will be very hard to put on, there is a little bit of technique to it to get them all the way on (I like to tip the boot to put the toe in first, then twist the boot side to side to wiggle the rest of the hoof into the boot, finally make sure that you have the heel all the way down in the boot, you can slap it with the palm of your hand or some people use a hammer). After you have worn them for a few rides they stretch a bit and are much easier to put on. I can slide mine on no problem now. The second problem with these boots is that without the gaitor they can come off fairly easily. You need to make sure that you clamp the wire down to the tightest setting that you possibly can ( I stomp on mine with my foot because my hand isn't strong enough to put it down on the tightest setting). I almost always ride on gravel roads so on the occasion that one does fly off I can ride back and put it right back on again. I don't recommend riding through tall grasses or swamps with them because if it falls off then you've lost it (I've lost 2 this way, hard to find a black boot in the black mud.) I have had really bad luck with the gaitor on mine, it is much easier to put the boot on without it because the gaitor tends to bunch up under the heel as you are trying to wiggle it on. Also a friend's horse got rubbed under the gaitor so I took them off and don't use them. They would probably stay on better with this attachment.
Overall these are a fairly good product, although somewhat difficult to get used to. They are a bit more work than the typical iron shoe becuase you need to put them on for each ride. Also they do have a tendency to fall off if they are not on tight or if you go through muddy areas. However, compared to the cost of shoeing your horse you could probably save money since they are a one time purchase. Also if your horse loses a shoe you don't need to wait for the farrier to reset it, you can just pop it back on yourself. They are also nice because your horse can be out without shoes on, some people really like their horses to be barefoot in the pasture.
I do recommend this product but I feel that you should do your research before you buy one. Look over the EasyCare website [...] because they have a lot of other kinds of boots, some easier to put on and some more difficult. They will have videos and explainations for you to help you decide which boot is best for you. Happy Riding!
